The movie was released on December 23, 2016 with over 1000 screens across India, 200 screens across USA and Canada and around 100 screens across Australia. The movie has also been dubbed into Telugu titled as ‘Dangalu’, with Nandamuri Balakrishna playing the father of Geeta Phogat. The film was awarded an 'A' certificate by the CBFC with a runtime of 140 minutes.

The entire cast is credited in alphabetical order alongside their character names. The film was initially released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and other Indian languages under the same name.Music is composed by Pritam, while the soundtracks are scored by Rajesh Roshan. Lyrics are penned by Kausar Munir, Amitabh Bhattacharya & Javed Akhtar along with Tulsi Kumar. The song "Dangdidi" was released on YouTube on 10 December 2016 while the remaining songs were released on 15 December 2016. The soundtrack album consists of eight tracks for both soundtrack and theme songs while one track is dedicated to Pakistani actor Mahira Khan. "Sultan Ali Khan" grandson of Ghulam Ali Khan appears as a playback singer in the film as well as in the soundtrack album. There are a total of four theme tracks for this film, which include "Dangdidi", "Khapaak Ki Handi", "Ishqyaun Dhishqyaun" and "Aitbaar Teri".The soundtrack has been critically acclaimed with many praising the excellent lyrics, soulful compositions and their fusion with situational contexts. Joginder Tuteja from Rediff.com who gave it 4/5 stars, stated that Pritam has lived up to the expectations by providing music to an Aamir Khan movie after a long time. "India-Forums" gave a 4/5 rating and said, "One understands the reason behind Pritam giving this album a rural flavour." Shailee Vyas from "Koimoi.com" rated it 4/5 and wrote, "The album has a perfect mix of lively tunes and soft melodies that one would love to play on a rainy day." Priya Adivarekar from "Mid Day" gave the soundtrack 3.5/5 stars and praised the use of music as well as lyrics. She said, "Composer Pritam fuses western classical music with Punjabi folk numbers to give the songs an earthy feel.
